|North Oakland Community Charter School: Funding in-school enrichment programs|
Editor’s note: Champion Lara P., a parent and volunteer of North Oakland Community Charter School (NOCCS), explains how her small charter school turned to OneCause, the new home of Schoolpop, to increase funding for curriculum, consumable materials and in-school enrichment programs, like physical education and music. They've now earned over $9,000 in contributions to supplement their traditional school fundraising efforts. Below she offers best practices to help you make a difference for your school.
> Question: How many students attend NOCCS?
> Question: How does NOCCS use its OneCause contributions?
Answer: Because NOCCS is such a small school, much of our school fundraising – including funds from OneCause – go toward “bread and butter” items, including curriculum, consumable materials and in-school enrichment programs, like physical education and music.
> Question: What is your current OneCause contribution goal?
Answer: We don't set an official goal, but we hope to generate more than $2,000 in net contributions a year.
> Question: What resources will you use to reach that contribution goal?
Answer: Champion emails have been a great way to keep up on the latest news and communicate updates to our Supporters.
> Question: What best practices can you offer to other school Supporters and Champions?
Answer: I think that one very effective thing we did was to have a sign up table at beginning-of-the-school-year events. Volunteers staffed the tables and enrolled new Supporters on the spot. They also helped existing Supporters update their credit card information and made sure their contributions were directed to NOCCS. To catch those we may have missed, we followed up with an enrollment "how to" e-mail to our families. We also send reminders before holidays to direct Supporters to do their shopping through OneCause.com.
> Question: What do you and your Supporters like most about OneCause?
Answer: OneCause makes it easy for registered Supporters of NOCCS to donate money to the school – just by shopping online at their favorite participating retailers!
